Tram failure at Langworthy (16 April 2026)
At 15:30 BST on Thursday, 16 April 2026, tram number 3122/3110 forming a service from Eccles to Ashton-under-Lyne via MediaCityUK slowed to a halt on the approach to Langworthy’s inbound platform. The service was a double (two coupled trams).
Tram 3122 leading 3110 passed the final signal approaching Langworthy tram stop, which is located on Eccles New Road.
The tram stopped in an inconvenient place right on Eccles New Road, not having reached the tram-only section for Langworthy tram stop.
Cars were then stuck in traffic because of this tram eastbound on Eccles New Road, and some road vehicles decided to risk using the other lane for westbound traffic temporarily to pass the tram, which is just short of 60 metres long. There are also poor sightlines here, which made the move increasingly unsafe, but many road vehicle drivers did this before the tram was moved.
Passengers were loaded off the tram a few minutes afterward. Tram services were affected for around an hour. It was attempted to run services on the Eccles Line as far as MediaCityUK, but this did not happen (at least it didn’t have a regular service until after the tram was taken out-of-service and moved).
